Charles Darnay

Charles Darnay's character can be described as being well-kept honest and caring throughout book 2.   First, Darnay says " my present name though but slightly changed from my mothers, is not, as you will remember, my own. I wish to tell you what that is, and why I am in England. "  in this quote is talking to Dr. Manette about how his last name differs from his mothers last  name because his other last name has a bad background and he wants to be honest with Dr. Manette before St. Luci and he wants to be honest with Dr. Manette before  asking Lucy to marry him him.  Another quote that Darnay says is "  I knew that when she is clinging to you, the hands of a baby, girl and woman, all in one, around your neck. I know that and loving you she sees and loves her mother and her own age, loves you at my age, loves her mother brokenhearted, loves you for your dreadful trial  in your blessed restoration ."  This shows that he is a caring person and realizes that Dr. Mannette  and Lucie mother are very important to Lucie.  The last quote that Dickens says is  "Was a young man of about five and 20, well groomed and well looking, with a sunburn cheek and a dark I. His condition was that every young gentleman. He was finally dressed in just was a young man of about five and 20, well groomed and well looking, with a sunburnt cheek and a dark Eye. His condition was that of a young gentleman. He was plainly dressed in black, or very dark gray, and his hair, which is long and dark, was gathered in the ribbon at the back of his neck."  This quote explains that he is a well-kept well-dressed gentlemen and that he is not  A descendent of a poor family and it said he was a  "young gentleman"  which means he was probably very polite and caring.  Charles Darnay is described as a well-kept young gentleman and a caring and honest person so far in the book .

Light and dark

In A Tale of Two Cities, Charles Dickens uses Light and Dark to set the shifting tone of hopeless or scared to loving in their relationship. " his cold white head mingled with her radiant hair, which warmed and lighted it as though it was the light of freedom shining on him. " (Dickens 34) This quote of Light shows that Lucie is his light, because it says " it was the light of freedom shining on him..." which says she is the reason he will be recalled to life and will have 'freedom'. "He had put up a hand between his eyes and the light, and the very bones of it seemed transparent." (Dickens 30)This shows that he had been locked up so long that when he went to block the light his hand seemed transparent and not there because he had withered away from being in prison for so long. "As the darkness closed in, the daughter laid hr head down on the hard ground close at her father's side, and watched him. The darkness deepened and deepened as they both lay quiet."(Dickens 36) This quote about Darkness shows their relationship because she was so focused on him, and the were both quiet, she was close him showing a little of that loving tone. " and her hair drooping over him curtained him from the light." (Dickens 35) This quote about Light shows their loving tone because she had her hair drooped over shielding him from the Light or the outside world which he could be scared of since the world can change a lot in 18 years. As you can see Dr. Manette has changed a lot during his time in prison and he has never really had a relationship with his daughter, Dickens gives us a sense of their relationship by using Light and Dark to represent the hopelessness to loving tone.

In Chapter 5 of A Tale of Two Cities by Charles dickens there is a big wine spill from a large cask in front of a wine shop. Everyone around would do everything that they could to get the wine. Some would use handkerchiefs from other women's heads, some would use cups and even cup their hands to drink it. Since it was red wine it stained people's clothing, hands, and all on the streets. Dickens says “those who had been greedy with the staves of the cask, had acquired a tigerish smear about the mouth; and one tall Joker so does merge those who had been greedy with the staves of the cask, had acquired a tigerish smear about the mouth; and one tall joker besmirched, His head more out a long squalid bag of a nightcap than in it, scrawled upon a wall with his fingers dipped in muddy wineless- BLOOD”(Dickens 22-23). This quote could show foreshadowing for later events because since all of the red wine was stained over everyone and everywhere this could resemble a war or fight of some kind. In the quote it mentions blood, which is red and wine is red so that also shows a resemblance.
